This article says it all. College administration are taking the easy way out by cutting men’s sports and scholarships in “effort” to comply with Title IX. Instead of making moves to implement prong two and create more opportunity for the unrepresented sex they cut opportunity from the overrepresented non revenue sports team to comply. This is just laziness because they don’t want to do the work and research that will lead to creating new opportunities.

I like what he has to say about football as well. 85 Division 1 A scholarship is killing men’s opportunities. This is why universities comply with title IX so they  have more money to pump into their football program. Look at JMU just four years after the cut and their building this super stadium with club levels for a D1 AA team that has had decent seasons since 2005, but play a level of football far superior to the D1 single A level.  Since those 85 scholarships count against Title IX and there is not ones women team that carrier a roster let along full scholarships even close to what football has everyone else has to suffer.

I would like to point out a few things in this article. Yes, JMU did have a lot of varsity teams, but in the year 2ooo due to Title IX a lot of the smaller none revenue teams faced a huge budget cut and lost the opportunity to offer scholarships such as the wrestling team. This made the sports a lot cheaper to run and one of the reason there was no reason to cut them completely. They also cut our archery team that was currently ranked number one in the nation.

 Second: JMU choose to cut based on proportionality. LOOK AT THE RATIO OF MENS AND WOMENS SPORTS before the cuts. They were about even with 50.7% of sports were female and 49.3% were men. Let’s go even further… being a college athlete is a privilege. It means you have the talent, drive, and athletic ability that has taken you years of sacrifice and hard work to develop. You do this to become an elite level athlete that most college students never reach. This is why proportionally is wrong. Do you think all 61% of females and 39% of males enrolled at JMU during this time have what it takes to play D1 sports? The answer is NO! just like every student is not in the honors program, just like every student doesn’t have what it takes to play instrument at an elite level. It takes a LOT of work to get where those athletes are and a University has no right to deprive these athletes of their sports without even a glimmer of a warning. These athletes come to compete and universities all over are taking what they promised away from them because of “Title IX.”

This is a critical picture because it’s of both male and female athletes advocating for Titile IX reform. You are not seeing a group of women protesting inequality or a group of men protesting for reform. They are united together they realize its not 1970, 1980, 1990 anymore and things have changed. It is wrong for schools to use Titile IX to take away oppertunity instead of creating oppertunity. It’s away for them to hid around the fact that the sports are cut for money reason. Title IX must be reform. Also notice they are standing infront of the U.S. department of education.

This is a great photo because it’s predominantly women fighting for Title IX rights for themselves and for men. A sign says “We Love Mens Sports” says it all.  After all the negatives women have been in the past fighting for equal rights and athletic opportunities while men stood around not really supporting them it’s amazing that women are fighting for our rights. They are doing this because they know what it’s like to have opportunity taken away from them based on their sex and they are standing up for what is right. The true meaning of Title IX is not to cut opportunities and prevent athletes from fulfilling their dream. It was formed to CREATE opportunity and make athletic dreams come true. REFORM TITLE IX

This is JMU’s swim team in purple and gold fighting for equality in sports up in Washington, D.C. Its obvious that this team is devastated that half of their teammates will be gone next season. Yes, they cut the means team and kept the women’s team, but the women’s team made the effort and sacrifice to march of to D.C. in effort to reform Title IX. The U.S. government needs to take notice of this and reform Title IX so universities can stop hiding behind it like a curtain to cover up the real reason they cut teams….. MONEY

My Comments:

JMU chooses to meet compliance regulations based on percentages. Everyone knows that JMU has about forty percent more girls than guys every year. The thing that really gets me is just because the student body is 61:31 girls over guys should not mean it should be the same for sports. Everyone knows that not every girl on campus does not wants to be a varsity athlete so why should we match sports ratio with academic ratio…. Let the athletes come to school to play their sports. Don’t tell people they can’t compete anymore because more girls choose to come to this school. Since 2006 I have seen NO new woman varsity sports program put into action. All I hear about and see is our new football stadium, baseball and softball complexes, and a lot more nice new sports jackets around campus. I am not saying that there using all Title IX money to fund these operations I am just saying its very interesting that these new luxury items are appearing all over the place.
